It has always worked for me except on computers that cannot boot from
USB (eg 1998 era computers). Are you sure you set up the bios to boot
from usb before booting from the hard disk? And are you sure your system
does not use efi?
And that the fedora you have on the usbstick is not set up to boot from
efi rathr than from mbr?
