The BIOS report was simply (as I stated originally) "S.M.A.R.T. tripped."

I ran SeaTools for DOS from a CD, so there was no place to save whatever 
log it might have created. All it displayed on the screen was "Failed."

HDSentinel showed a large number of reallocated sectors and weak 
sectors. As I write this, MiniTool Partition Wizard is copying one of 
the two partitions on the dying drive to a new drive.
