Manufacturers have a history of setting hugely overoptimistic thresholds and if the SMART failure is the first you know it is often too late. Best advice is to run something like HDDSentinel or the smard from the smartmontools (I think the demon needs Linux though) to get an early warning. These warn you when defectives start to show up.
