The original Byte of the Stretch machine from IBM was 8 bits.  As usual, 
other people have stretched the terminology.  The idea was that a character 
would fit into one byte, and therefore char=byte, but then of course, other 
machines had other character sizes.

Today, the situation is much better, because the strange architectures have 
died out.  Therefore, the current meaning of "byte" is "octet", and you only 
need to say "octet" when you are operating in a context, where "byte" is 
ambiguous, e.g. when you talk about computer history.  Example: "The Stretch 
machine introduced the concept of the byte, which on Stretch was relly an 
octet, unlike the size on other machines of that time."
