Not necesarily. It could be tabs. Some editors used comment lines to
define the tabs arbitrarily:

then the file can be rendered with spaces as appropriate.

Not at all. The file displays perfectly, using fixed font as usual on
such files and editors. As they display here in our nntp readers.
