Instead of reusing your old profile with its old Gmail account, what
about creating yet another Gmail account in Tbird that connects to the
same Gmail account.  That is, you would have 2 accounts in Tbird with
both pointing to the same Gmail account.  If the new Gmail account
works, you could drag the local messages from the old Gmail POP account
(all of which are in Tbird since POP stores locally) into the new Gmail
account (which would still all be local).
