Yes, but the words "symbolic" occurs in German order of precedence.

English aristocracy is not symbolic, but real.

As far as I understand the system, there are ranks and files in a formal 
organisation, which are 'mirrored' by the social status of a person in 
the real world.

This is valid for every single person in public view (musicians, actors, 
writers, publishers, sportsmen, politicians, tv-show moderators, 
military personal, company leaders and so forth).

So the ritual promotion is such kind of sect is mirrored by a promotion 
in the society.

But the status in the society is real (not "symbolic").

This system apparently spreads out around the globe and includes members 
of other nations. Those would actually comply with an alien nation and 
commit a crime against their own constitution'

But - on the other hand - it is so NICE to become knighted and the Queen 
is soooo friendly.
