I think my mother didn't think that people should change the 
carefully-chosen name of the child, and also in some cases disliked the 
popular nicknames for names she might otherwise have chosen. This is a 
little odd in one respect, since there had been a famous family dispute 
over my mother's name when one parent insisted on calling her by the 
name he preferred (I think it came from his side of the family) until 
she was four or five, while everyone else called her by her middle name. 
That dispute didn't involve nicknames, although it did involve parental 
choice.

When their third child was due, my parents suggested that my sister and 
I suggest possible names, none of which, incidentally, they chose. We 
had a rather youthful and bizarre taste in names. When I came up with a 
normal one (Theresa), my mother dismissed it on the grounds that it was 
often mispronounced (as 'Treesa') and quite often turned into nicknames 
she disliked.
