If you are trying to back your car's wheels against a low curb, the latter
approach might be the only practical one (going until resistance is felt,
though, rather than listening for a crunch).  Designing a curb such that
it can be used in such fashion without damage to itself or the vehicle may
be easier than trying to design the vehicle and curb with adequate visibility
to allow a driver to judge the curb's position before contact.

Some kinds of file system would be able to let a program know in advance
whether any particular kind of read would succeed, some might offer
indications whether a read is likely to succeed or likely to fail, and
some might not offer anything other than "try and see".  If a system does
not provide anything except the latter, code may have no alternative but
to use that approach.
