They did have command lines of their own, but if I needed to control them from a script, that would be read from a file. And if a simple console app such as a compiler took input from stdin and wrote it to stdout, I would regard it as an unfinished toy program. But these matters are trivial. I've just taken a simple program that reads from from A, and outputs to file B. I then wrote a wrapper program which gets input from stdin, creates a file from it, runs the other program with that input, then reads the generated file and writes it to stdout. Of course it may go wrong when the file involved is 8GB, which is 300Mloc in a single file. Look, if the application actually required reading from a stream of unknown length, and it needed to do something with it as it went along, them I would write the application accordingly. But 99.99% of my file operations don't require anything like that. It just seems to be a different mindset over there in Linuxland. -- bart
