They can all take input from stdin, even when that is connected via a pipe. Maybe the issue is with the way Windows shells connect tools together. If modern shells still fake pipes using files, then insisting that all inputs be seek-able (or stat-able) will not show up as an issue. Maybe it is virtually impossible to give a Windows program a non-seekable input? This would surprise me, because pipes give one a natural way to use multi-core processors. Note that I'm not saying that the Windows versions of, say awk and perl do anything other than treat their inputs as proper streams. I'm just saying that the tools you write might not show up as being any less capable than these because of the way the shell connects them up. > I expect there is only one stdin per program. I am suggesting that C programs can easily be written so that they handle any inputs. If the programmer wants to do that using a "read_whole_stream" function, that can be written so as to be universal at very little extra cost. I don't see why you keep advocating the method of getting the size first since it has very little benefit. > Once stdin is finished [EOF detected] can it be used again in the same > run as the program? It's just too undisciplined for me. I don't know where this comes from. I'm talking about very ordinary programs that read and process stream from start to finish, some of which will need or want the whole input before doing anything with it (like your reverse example). >> But there are two interesting technical questions you (or other Windows >> users) can help with. >> >> (A) Is fgetc so slow that it would put someone off using when it's the >> natural way to process some input? Can you try the latest version where I was prompted to try the POSIX functions that avoid FILE object locking? The unlocked gets version was, on Linux, even faster that the other which is not unexpected since the others do more work. You may have to poke about a bit to find out what Windows calls these unlocked IO functions is the libc your are using does not provide the POSIX getc_unlocked directly. > All timings are measured with clock() at start and end of > file-read. Yes, it's horrendous. I wonder how much (if any) of that is locking the FILE structure. > But as I said, it might be possible to use SIZE when the file is > seekable, and GETC otherwise. But it is possible to use realloc method always, and then you never have to think about it again. I accept that /you/ may not care, but since the cost is minimal you should not encourage others to write limited stream reading functions. > (Note that on the C versions, most compilers will give a different > result for the sum of the bytes between GETC and the others. Yes. I deliberately used a file with nothing but 7-bit characters since I couldn't decide what the correction should be. We could force a signed value in all cases, or force and unsigned one in the buffered cases using either an unsigned char array or a cast. Both seemed like a distraction from the main point. > Not significant, but the test is neater if all outputs are > equivalent.) Agreed. You can just use a 7-bit file though. -- Ben.
