How inefficient; have you measured it?
If I do this in my interpreted language:
var words=("aardvark",...,"zygote") # 110,000 elements
this is implemented by 110,000 push instructions at runtime. It adds 0.1
seconds to start up - for interpreted byte-code.
That has to be balanced against other approaches such as reading 110,000
lines from a text file.

The C code is fine. The Eiffel to C translator is fine. The Eiffel code
is fine (the programmer has merely created a large table, presumably
required for their application).
But it goes wrong for some largish values on N on certain C compilers.
So of course you choose to fix one of the things that isn't wrong!
Another choice is to switch C compilers (eg. to lccwin). But what really
needs to be fixed are those poor compilers.
(I found a problem with large string tables in mine which I wasn't aware
of - maybe /I/ should have done such tests sooner - and I will now
proceed to fix it.)

And how do you find out the capabilities of different compilers when
given somewhat extreme input?

How do you know whether it can or can't?
How do you know how big a table or big a block of assignments gcc can
cope with?

I think that's the first time you've expressed such an opinion - writing
code that compiles well with any compiler. Normally you're happy with
using inefficient-looking constructs but that you know your gcc will
collapse down to the essentials.
