What Mr Brown doesn't take into account is that C is used as a back end
language for other languages.
For instance Eiffel.
And some Eiffel compilers generate code for
int table[3]={1,2,3} // Equivalent in Eiffel of course
int main(void)
{
table[0]=1; table[1]=2; table[3]=3;
...
}
What is perfectly legal. Problem is when you have a table with 45000
entries!
One of my customers was the JPL, that used an Eiffel compiler to
calculate ephemerides and orbit parameters... My compiler was the only
one able to compile the "main" function that consisted of thousands and
thousands of statements like:
int main()
{
// ...
table[34765]=63422; table[34766]=619563; table[34767]=26445;
// ...
}
Both gcc and MSVC would fail.
