What's not sensible about just writing one simple assignment followed by 
another?

The scaling limitations of the C compiler that might be used should not 
be a consideration.

Would it be a consideration if you are writing one element of an 
initialised array after another? If not then why should it be for 
anything else. This is the complexity of the original source about which 
little can be done.

Interesting. Something goes wrong with compiling huge numbers of 
consecutive assignments, but your reaction is that it is the generator 
program that should be changed** instead of the C compiler.

Of course, some C compilers can cope perfectly well, but you would still 
thing the Eiffel program should be changed rather than C compilers that 
have trouble?

Under what circumstances would you suggest that a program like gcc could 
do with some work?

elements? Where is your evidence that that is going to help? Without 
actually testing that repeating lots of identical elements will work 
better or not, how do you decide?

Since any such tests, according to you, are a total waste of time.)
