I really ought to get an English grammar book myself.  I think I knew all 
the tenses when I was at school, but I didn't realise that English even 
had a subjunctive until we came across subjunctives in French.  Yes we'd 
come across it in Latin before that, but it somehow hadn't clicked.

In my experience most folks don't consciously know the grammar rules of 
their own language, they just know what sounds right and what doesn't.
