Booting from USB has nothing to do with Linux. Your computer either is capable to boot from a (well prepared) USB stick, or not (in case it's old). Safest way to test whether it can is downloading a Live-CD image for Linux, for example Ubuntu. There are instructions of how to get this on the stick. When done, see if the computer can boot. If not the boot sequence might be wrong. On HP notebook and desktops you can press F9 very early after powering up to select the boot device. -- Andreas I use a Unix based operating system, which means I get laid almost as often as I have to reboot my computer.
