As a general rule C has functions with minimal argument checking since
it's easier to add the test than it is to remove it:
inline
void *nzmemcpy(void *restrict p1, const void *restrict p2, size_t len)
{
return len ? memcpy(p1, p2, len) : p1;
}
Is this really making programmers' lives miserable?
(Whilst it's possible that the implementation's version of memcpy could
incorporate this test more efficiently than the above on-liner, but it
would still probably incur some cost.)

It is usually possible to tell the compiler to have a go at doing that
(-O0 for example) but, when the language standard does not define the
meaning of the program, it's not always clear what the compiler has been
told to do.
