The language is just symbols in sequence.  An implementation of the
language must give those symbol the correct execution semantics as
defined in the standard.  So the implementation is all the pieces that
are needed to run programs.  That can give very odd effects when the
linker is from one vendor, the library from another and the compiler
from a third.

So, no, you certainly don't need a linker.
