There's a misconception that keeps doing the rounds here which you are
perpetuating.  Using a union to reinterpret the bits of an object of one
type as those of another is not off-standard or banned or not legal C or
any of the other supposedly prohibited things it is sometimes said to
be.  For obvious reasons, the C standard doesn't say what the result
will actually be in most cases, but it's no less legal or valid than
writing CHAR_MAX + 1.
