It's not desirable to be able to start writing a bad loop immediately.
You must first make the case that these loops are better.

Yes, there will be more checking (except in the case of single byte
reads). There's no "might" about it. If you are talking about C
programs that don't check the actual input, we're not talking about the
same thing at all.

You need to give an actual example or I can't show the simpler idiomatic
C version, can I? Here you just have two bits of code that do different
things (at least it looks like that from what little detail is given).
This discussion is not a zero-sum, win/loose exchange because I'm not
saying that EOF testing is never better, only that it almost never is.
If you can give an actual example, I'll have a "canonical" exception to
my point and I think you'll find that these cases are rarer than you
thought. We both get something from it.

Right. And the same thing can happen if the program is presented with
junk data to start with. In what way is "input that changes" different
to "input"? In one case you read, verify and process, but in the other
"you might as well give up"? I don't see it. You just read, verify and
process in all cases.
