The thing about being able to quickly modify and recompile the program only goes so far. Often a program works perfectly on a 1 megabyte test file, but then fails several gigabytes into the real application data, and it takes a while to get there. Reproducing the bug means you have to actually run all that data again, so you don't want to have to keep repeating it more than necessary.
