Way back in the day when I was first learning about pipes and redirects and such, I was learning it on a PC with MS-DOS. That OS, of course, had no real mechanism to support interprocess pipes, but made do with the kluge of using intermediate files to fake it. That worked well enough, and had the charming side effect of making piped files seekable, rewindable, length-able, just like ordinary files. And every scrap of documentation went out of its way to point out that this was *odd* behavior, *not* a standard way for pipes to work, and it would be a *terrible* idea to get used to doing it that way. The youthful know-it-all I was, I bristled at that, but I listened...and many years later when I started using real OSes with real pipes, it turned out to be to my benefit after all. But that's just me, taking wisdom from my scholarly elders and whatnot. Some people just have to do it themselves. Best of luck to them.
