mid 2000s, and the drm was forced by the music and movie industry, not
apple.

the music industry was terrified that apple's itunes music store would
result in rampant piracy, so they forced apple to add drm. once they
saw that didn't happen, they allowed apple (and amazon and others) to
remove the drm.

unfortunately, the movie industry has yet to figure that out and still
requires drm.

it also only affects the honest people. those who want to pirate can
(and do) get around it.
