I've been mulling this over for quite some time now, and the addition of 
Files and attachment of external devices, reading from SD cards etc, has 
tipped me over.

I've just ordered a new iPad Pro 12.9" 512GB, from John Lewis (to get 
the 3 year warranty) a Pen 2 and a USB converter cable.

I'll be switching everything over and selling off the old iMac, and 
going mobile device only here.

I have all my photos on Adobe cloud, and everything else is already on 
iCloud, so it won't take much to make the switch.

A number of factors were responsible. I can't afford a new iMac 27" 
again. I did consider a laptop, but I find something appealing about the 
iPad. I have a 9.7" base model already, and have been amazed by how that 
performs. Lots of reviews show that the iPad Pro outperforms the MacBook 
Air by some margin too.

I already have an Apple wireless keyboard, and an older trackpad, and 
with the Pen, I think I have all that well covered for my own needs - 
the Magic Keyboard is just far too rich for my pocket.

I also feel that after a few years (say, four or five), there's more 
comparative residue value in the iPad than there has been in the iMac, 
so a future upgrade might not be so painful.

We also really need to get back the spare room, we have more need now 
(when we can) to use it as a spare visitor room, rather than an office. 
It's always been a pain for me when someone stays and I can't get to my 
computer at 5am when I wake up, and just want to browse a bit and edit 
some photos.

So, the question arises from that, how best to organise my external 
HDDs. I have 6 in total here, but once I go iPad only, they'll mostly 
become redundant, I'll obviously keep my photo archive drive to copy new 
photos onto as a backup, and probably find a way to clone that to a 
second copy. I think initially I'll just mothball most of them and keep 
them as is until such time comes they're clearly no longer needed, and 
maybe retask them as multiple copies of my photo collection, which could 
be kept with other family members (just a consideration at this point).

Anyway, I'm sure I'll have some head scratching moments, but overall I 
can't see anything being a real show stopper, it'll mostly be just 
getting my head around a new way of doing things.
