it's very true.

i've restored more iphones than i care to remember and in every single
case, the restoration was identical to what existed before, with the
sole exception of a few passwords, which as i said, is intentional for
a security measure (and even that can be backed up with an encrypted
backup). 

all you nee to do is click sync (or set it to automatically sync) and a
backup is done automatically prior to syncing new content. restoring is
nothing more than clicking the restore button, or it asks you for a new
device. 

it's *extremely* straightforward and not the least bit confusing.

nonsense. of course it backs that up. 

since that stuff is already on your computer, all it does is mark which
ones you have on the device, so when you restore, it just copies them
back. there is no reason to copy them to the computer again, when
they're already there in the first place. 

if you downloaded new podcasts, music, etc on the device, that will be
copied to the computer when you sync, adding it to the backup.

this all happens automatically, without any user intervention at all.

again, i've done this countless times and it works perfectly every
single time. restoration might take a while if there's a lot of content
to put back, but that's to be expected.

i seem to recall you use manually manage media. in that case, you have
explicitly told itunes that *you* will handle syncing and backing up of
media content. that's why it's called manually manage. 

you can't complain that itunes isn't backing up your device when you
told it you don't want it to do that. it's doing exactly what you told
it to do.

the reason i mentioned android is because backups are *much* worse with
android. 

backup/restore on ios devices is very simple and straightforward. it
'just works.'

except when you intentionally disable it.
