A plausible theory, but there is some counterevidence: The Linux
console produced DEL pretty early in the game, probably from the start
(xterm and the rest of the Linux ecosystem switch to that much later),
and Linus Torvalds is not a fan of Emace
<http://marc.info/?l=git&m=122955159617722&w=2>, so it is unlikely
that he chose that setting for Emacs' sake.
