The DEC Alpha 21064a (1993), Intel Pentium Pro (1995), Cyrix 6x86
(1996), and AMD K6 (1997) had return stacks, so by 1999 they were
pretty common.
In my own experiments with quicksort in Forth
<2013Aug15.191549@mips.complang.tuwien.ac.at>, I found that the
single-recursive version had a better branch prediction accuracy than
an iterative version, essentially because the iterative version lost
information about whether an even or odd number of partitions remain
to be processed that the recursive version maintained in the state of
the return stack and the program counter.
