Which, conversely, means that you think that this behaviour of Gforth
and SwiftForth is non-standard.
I think you are wrong. The standard has a throw code -28 (user
interrupt), which seems to be designed for that. And Forth is a
practical language for real-world environments, and users typing
Ctrl-C are a fact in the real world. What should a system do when the
user types Ctrl-C?
1) Ignore it? That's certainly not what the user intended.
2) Exit the Forth system without letting the application do any
cleanup (the vfxlin way; does VFX behave the same way on other OSs)?
There is no provision for such behaviour in the standard, and as a
user I find this behaviour not very helpful. Still, better than
option 1).
3) Return to the Forth command line without letting the application do
any cleanup (iForth-2.1 behaves that way). There is no provision for
such behaviour in the standard, either. As a user, I find it better,
but the lack of cleanup is not user-friendly. There may be
incompletly updated data structures, but if the user is worried about
that, he can just exit the system, so this is better than option 2).
4) THROW a Forth exception so that the application can clean up and/or
handle the Ctrl-C in some other application-defined way. The
exception -28 in the standard is an indication that this is a standard
behaviour, but a more explicit wording would not hurt. Option 4 is at
least as useful as the other options in the usual case: Even on
programs that are not designed for asynchronous THROWs, it likely
performs all cleanups designed for synchronous THROWs; it may miss
some, but that's not worse than option 3. There may also be
incompletely updated data structures, but that's not worse than option
3).
Now, with option 4, we can get even less probablility of missed
cleanup by appropriate coding, and that's what I discussed earlier.

I think the audience is well aware that users type Ctrl-C. In
particular, you should be aware of that because we discussed the issue
earlier, in the thread containing
<2014Jul25.125044@mips.complang.tuwien.ac.at>.
