Well, as I have just bought my sister an iPad, that is also good to
know, though she only gets 5GB of cloudiness so moving stuff around
could take some juggling.

I don’t think there’s a tidy solution for this. I thought about bunging the media onto iCloud Drive, and use VLC as a player. It’s works, but it’s not elegant, or easily shareable. -- Andy H

Plex doesn’t really seem to offer a solution to my particular problem, as it still needs a desktop/static source device. It seems that there’s not going to be an easy way to achieve this as yet, but perhaps the next stage might be to try and swap the iMac for something smaller, just to handle the storage, backup, and upload of media. All of my media is on external drives, so almost anything would do, perhaps an old MacBook. -- Andy H

Now my wife is using my old iPad 9.7”, her win-laptop might be redundant, and does live near the tv stuff. I had thought about just using that. It’s not a stunner, but has been reliable and stable, although I’m not sure how well ‘Music/iTunes’ works off Windows these days. It has the advantage that we already own it of course, but might have to do some drive swapping and reformatting (but that is only a wild last resort thought at this time). Better than it would on a modern Mac, since iTunes is all in one place still on Windows instead of being sliced up into Music, Finder, Podcasts, Photos and whatever else. So it's a one-stop-shop for your CD ripping, Match sub and/or Home Sharing, and local backups for the iThings. All of which were a terrible clutter when actually trying to use iTunes to just play some music dammit, but awfully useful in what is effectively a server.
