If the "runaway greenhouse" theory was correct, with the CO2 partial
pressure of Mars being 14 times that of Earth's, Mars would be a

Yeah, Venus. With ~96% carbon dioxide constituent of the atmosphere.
With rampant volcanic activity and sulfuric acid clouds with an acid
concentration likely greater than 70%.
Sulfuric acid has exponential Lambert absorption coefficients in the
5500-14,500 cm^-1 region. Spectral reflectance for sulfuric acid falls
rapidly at frequencies below 6000 cm^-1. Although the absorption index
is small throughout the visible and near infrared, the radiant flux
from the sun is large in these spectral regions. It's the sulfuric
acid absorbing and trapping the heat on Venus, not the carbon dioxide.
You'll note that Mars has an atmosphere comprising ~95% carbon
dioxide, yet the temperature there falls to 220 F below zero on the
dark side of the planet. Because while carbon dioxide absorbs
efficiently in the infrared, it also *emits* efficiently in the
infrared, and thus on the dark side of the planet will re-emit to
space any heat it's gained on the light side of the planet, *along*
*with* any infrared that's been converted from other wavelengths... so
it actually causes a *cooling* effect overall. And experimental
observation bears that out.
Earth, with ~0.04% carbon dioxide constituent of the atmosphere. And
that's at near-historic lows. In the Ordovician, CO2 levels were at
least 5 times higher (and remember, this was long before man or even
any land-based life contributed to CO2 levels), sun output was only
0.09% different than today, and the earth slid into a glaciation
period that lasted a million years, killing the majority of life on
the planet. Given that CO2 levels are at least *5* *times* lower
today, why are we not in a perpetual glaciation period, if CO2 is such
a driver of global temperature?
Oh, that'd be because the same driver of climate throughout Earth's
existence is still in effect today... solar and orbital forcing. Man
