it is only 1% of earth, not enough mass blowing to really generate a lot
of power, and does Mars have strong prevailing winds ? think not.

they need power at night, and when the wind is blowing, so they must use
a nuk. no need for wind power. some solar may help but dust is a big
problem, how do you clean it with out water or personel or scratching it ?

it is mass, the mass of the water carrys far more heat than air, higher
effeciency, etc. Humans require a lot of water.

dry cleaning is with fluids, they used to use carbontet, but that causes
cancer. I saw a film from the early 50;s of people walking down into a
pool of carbontet, and back out again, all their clothes were cleaned.

but you cant have an air polutant on the station, therefore no dry cleaning.

Agree, both forms are likely to be intermittent.

So? Use multiple sources, {gasp} just like here on earth.

So you know they do plan to send a lots of material initially,
until it becomes self sustaining.

Sure, and if the water is available, that is the first choice.
JP was arguing there is little or no water available.

Yes, we agree that there are solutions

Yes, that is the advantage to robots. The don't die while waiting for
the power to come back on, the just go to sleep.

Intermittant and lacking in substance.

To get the equivelant electrical power of a small 50 MW reactor you need
over a million square meters of solar panel on Mars.

That would require a very large crew of leaf blower operators.

The non-conventional sources, i.e. not nuclear, coal, natural gas,
or hydro, are a tiny fraction of the power used on Earth.

While solar and wind could supply a small amount of energy on Mars,
enough to support a small research station, it is obviously not
enough to support a full blown colony with industry of any size.

Lots being measured in the equivelant of a medium sized city if
the goal is a colony.

No, I was not.

I stated the fact that it is unknown whether or not there are large
quatities of water available any place other than the poles.

Even the most starry eyed space cadet dreamer has to agree that putting
a colony at the poles is stupid.

True, but where do you get it if you don't have a massive chemical
industry manufacturing it?

The original post was about a self sustaining presense, so yes.

If all you have is a research outpost, then all you need is constant
resupply.

Clueless.

A lot of big nuclear plants if you want self sustaining.

Nothing is hard to make and maintain as long as you have the phone
number of a good industrial supply store and they deliver.

Mushrooms, while tasty, are low in calories and most essential nutrients
and only contain vitamin D if exposed to UV.

Solar: a long way from the sun so not much energy there.

The fuel is but a tiny fraction of what would need to be transported.

Don't exist.

The air is too thin to produce substantial amounts of wind power.

Musk needs to privately fund this. The USA is broke.

the fix is in already,

ted cruz introduced the bill for 16 Billion to congress to fund NASA for
Mars.

your tax dollars going into *Musk's pockets* to support already know

If it is for robotic probes, I'm all for it.

If it is to send starry eyed space cadets farther than low Earth orbit,
it is a waste of money.

Send hundreds of robots to Mars and scour every inch of it.

Is there actually any READILY available water?

Are there any USEFULL mineral deposits?

Where are they all located?

Until all the necessary resources to support an actual colony are
discovered, there is no reason to even talk about a colony on Mars.

If and when the resources are located, then a research station could
be set up to evaluate the possible viability of a colony.

But you'd need every one of them to have internal assay labs to analyze
sample. Meanwhile Humans can cover larger areas and identify potential
sources much more quickly.

Did Europe know whether there were any USEFUL mineral deposits in
the new world before colonizing here?
(Granted, it was not the same situation, but it is analogous.)

Human explorers are likely to find the deposits much faster than
remote robots.

I am sure that was one of the arguments made in Europe before the
first colonies were established in the new world.

Sorry, sometimes you have to take risks.
Personally I think this project is a good idea.
We have to leave the planet at some point. We should have to wait for
interstellar spacecraft for that to happen. It will never be "safe".
(Just make sure you are not the one wearing a red shirt. :)

Actually nice discussing this with you.

Utter bull shit.

Current probes already have internal assay labs and run 24/7 having
no need to rest, eat, or sleep nor do they need to be constantly
supplied with food, air, and water.

>> Is there actually any READILY available water?
>>
>> Are there any USEFULL mineral deposits?

Yes.

There was air, food, and water. Some of the natives had gold. The
availablity of lumber was obvious. Meat and fur from animals was
obvious.

> (Granted, it was not the same situation, but it is analogous.)

No, it is not.

>> Where are they all located?

Nonsense.

Besides being much faster, robots are orders of magnitude cheaper.

Then you would be wrong.

There were already people living in the New World, the Europeans knew
there were people living in the New World, so obviously everything
needed to live in the New World was there.

Sure, but this isn't one of them as currently there is no benefit
to going there.

Great, you pay for it then.

Yes, in 4.5 to 5.5 billion years when the Sun burns out, which will
also burn out for Mars.

I never said anything about "safe".

Easy fix. Recind the bush tax cuts. Tax capital
gains at regular income tax rates. Limit annual capital
loss offsets to 20% of annual income. Eliminated carried interest.

Basically, back to where we were when the country _wasn't_
broke.

Add new law stating that any offshore military excursion must be paid by raising
taxes immediately, no borrowing allowed.

So you would put more of a persons hard earned money into the dirty
hands of politicians !

and thanks to Obama and Hillary, US Dbet is $14,300,000,000,000

now you want to go spend more on a stupid pile of rocks and sand in a
vacuum, Mars.
