If I want to prove/test that a car with a speed of 400 km/hour can not 
penetrate a certain width of steel plate is this logic valid:

  I know that a bullet cannot penetrate that plate so a much slower car 
would not penetrate it neither.

I know there is energy involved. Does this car have so much more energy 
that it can still penetrate that plate even though a bullet cannot? (say 
bullet it made of very hard material).

But on the other hand bullet is much thinner so isnt it true that it 
penetrates more easily?

without needed info, it is hard to say,
as for both the bullet and the car
is hard  to determine the available / needed energy ratios.

As a rule of thumb, without any needed balistic knowledge,
the needed energy is proportional to the impact crossection,
while available energy is 1/2.m.v^2.

For the same shape and structure,
the crosssection is proportional to m^(2/3).

I am not familiar with physics too much so what would this mean? Best 
would be an answer without formulas but just explanation what is the 
result and why.

I mean, I have seen a lot of videos bullet penetrating a wide metal 
plate. But there is limit also: if the plate is wide enough it does not 
penetrate anymore. So could I then make an conclusion that a car would 
not penetrate that kind of plate neither because a bullet is more likely 
to do that?

Rough estimate is : it depends.
As there is no real input, even rough output is garbage.

Some cars penetrate some walls more easily than some bullets.
Some cars penetrate some walls less easily than some bullets.

It very depends on lot of not available data.

Result depends on particular values.

And even for particular values,
result would depend on practical test,
rather than on theoretical estimation.

Unless the energy is so high or low the result is obvious.

there are not bullets like bullet.
they differ in mass, velocity and shape.

There are also armor piercing bullets,
containing a comulative explosive charge,
what act like a miniature shot of the WWII German tiger tank.

you need shape of the car/bullet

you need hardness of car/bullet/plate

you need velocities and mass of car/bullet


there is a simple approximation,
the length times the mass of the bullet is equal to the length of 
penetration devided by the mass of the material.

but that applies to long items, like in spear fishing in water

the point is here that I wonder if using a bullet I could prove that 
other objects cannot penetrate certain material. The logic: if bullet 
cannot penetrate then neither the other object. Is this roughly true?

No, it is not true.

You have in your head that the bullet must be one of the more 
penetrative things around. But what is that based on, in your mind? That 
it is fast? That it is small and sharp? What?

As an example, a bullet will get absorbed by a hay bale, but a sharp 
blade that is swung by hand will cut right through a hay bale, and a car 
that is moving at a speed between the blade and the bullet will 
obliterate the hay bale without even slowing down.

That's the point that other people have been making. There is no ONE 
FACTOR that a bullet has that makes it more penetrating than other 
things. Whether something penetrates another depends on a number of 
factors -- the mass of the projectile, the structural composition of the 
projectile, the speed of the projectile, the shape of the projectile, 
the impacting surface area of the projectile. There isn't just one 
factor that is more important than the others.

It sounds almost as a bullet marking of walls
that can be crushed by an ISIS assassin car.

It is roughly true that if the unsuccessful bullet
has  the ratio available/needed energy = X,
than objects with this ration lower
will be usuccesfull as well.

The point is, while available energy is easy to calculate,
getting the needed energy is very hard.

Projectile penetration is highly complex and depends on the projectile
shape, velocity and material as well as the characteristics of the
material you are trying to penetrate.

At low velocities and hard pointed projectiles all you have is basic
mechanical deformation as the kinetic energy drives the point into
the material like a hammer drives a nail.

At sufficiently high velocities the energy released upon impact becomes
such that the target material is melted.

As for shooting cars at steel plates, does tearing the plate to pieces
count as penetration?

if the plate is 1/32 inch thick, car will blow a hole in it.

if plate is 1 inch thick, car will be compressed upon plate, no penetration


if car melted and recast as steel spear and shot at 1 inch steel plate 
at 300mph, it may make it through.

if replace steel plate with 1" titanium, good luck, as titanium has 
material charistics that make it stronger than steel in some applications

In reality any car that went through all but the thinnest of steel
plates, e.g. foil, would not come out the other side as a car.

What is holding this plate in place such that the plate is not simply pushed?
