Not true. Experiments spoke against the old properties previously
assigned to aether not against an aether. Einstein was smart enough to
see this and not reject aether, but everybody else decided to
'interpret" Einstein for him by saying that Aether did not exist at all
for unknown reasons.
Point is experiments showed that the original idea of an earth plowing
through a fixed aether as it hurtles through space is not correct.
However, the idea that waves can be propagated in "nothing at all" is
simply insane.
