Actually NORAD hasn't done the Santa thing for many years; it is done by volunteers and what is done has never had anyting to do with NORAD's radars, it is all press release graphics. -- Jim Pennino

Correct. But I don't think Run Away Roger has been told enough
for him to actually learn it. He has to be told the same thing

Faking flying objects (like in this case 'Santa') is real bad habit and extremely questionable. So this possibility should be revoked from NORAD, to disallow fakery of any kind. NORAD seems to be a joint operation of the USA and Canada. So US military should ask Canadians, if they are involved in some sort of faked flying objects (Santa, UFOs, planes). TH

Not at the time of 9/11; all of NORAD's radars looked outward for threats against the continental US nor were hijacked airplanes within US territory part of NORAD's mission. If we assume that Santa can solve the travelling salesman problem, and take the optimum route, and given that the vast majority of homes are in towns, I would expect the average distance to be much less than 1.63 miles.
