I suspect what the problem is...the FBI don't know how to use a desktop

The FBI needs Apple to disarm the feature that erases the content of
iPhones on the 10th wrong password so that agents can gain access to the
phone to learn if there are other sleeper cells or plots.

When Apple refused the court order, Apple defenders claimed it was
impossible to unlock the phone. In court papers filed last week, Apple
admits that’s not true, but still claims an “unreasonable burden.”

Well, it is unreasonable. Apple's only link to the matter is that some 
time in the past it manufactured a phone, which was sold to a person. 
That person then committed an unlawful act, and possibly put some 
information about the unlawful act, or other unlawful acts, onto the phone.

Why should Apple now be forced to use its own resources to aid the FBI? 
Should anyone capable of assisting the FBI in any respect be forced to 
do so?

Of course they should. EVERYONE should. If you witnessed something about 
the criminals (any criminals for that matter) and you won't tell then 
for the security of everyone in the country you must be forced to tell 
what you know even if it takes torture. Even if it takes removing all 
your assets and preventing you from ever earning a living. Nothing 
trumps security. There are no rights or freedoms so important that they 
can't be overridden in the name of national security. That is a given.

I would be in favor of torture in that case. If someone has operational knowledge of a terror plot against American citizens that they will not divulge, torture is not only necessary, it's morally obligatory.

I do not agree. If a country is ready to throw all it's laws, standards, 
morals and ideal away for some tin horn dictatorship based upon some 
"terrorist" threat, then I can assure you that there will be people who 
will insure that the "threat" appears. That's only smart.

If you can't operate your own country according to it's laws, ideal and 
principles, then you should at least let it be buried in holy ground.
