I have theory about this phenomenon, too:

It is a phenomenon somehow related to so called 'chain letters' and that 
is a scheme, where people gain benefits by exploitation of an increasing 
number of others, who subsequently are recruited into the system.

This causes exponential growth of people, who wish to exploit others, 
since that was the promise they received, once they were recruited.

Now we apparently have similar patterns in certain structures of the 
society, mainly aristocracy, secret/ honorary societies and organised crime.

Aristocracy is in a way a political system and not meant as system of 
personal privileges.

So the best man in a tribe became the chief and in ancient Rome the best 
nobleman was elected as emperor.

Once this was changed to dynasties, the number of members of nobility 
had grown faster than chiefs were required, because chiefs had more than 
one kid.

If you allow to inherits offices, these offices had to grow, if you want 
to find something fitting for the noble offspring.

This could be done to some extend, since a society could have more than 
simply a chief.

But now we have 'too many piglets for to few tits'.

Those in the lower ranks seek opportunities, but that they cannot find, 
since nobility must be rare, if you want to maintain a stable society.

Now the Anglo-Saxon scheme does not only include aristocrats, but all 
sorts of other systems, that promise wealth and fortunes, if the 
initiated just finds a few others, who would also want to profit from 
that scheme.

This CANNOT work, since exponential growth will simply blow up the 
system itself.
