why o why...
why debian keeps getting fancier like other operating system.
debian is a linux machine, not some toy like apple.
we dont need gnome 3 taking too much ram, in fact we dont need any graphical runtime.
they dont wanna support the poor wheezy for what ??? and why ??
its the most stable OS ever.. thats why they called it old stable.
why cant i add libpam-fprindt 1:0.5 to my wheezy so i can run my fingerprint ??
why nautilus in jessie is so fancy ??
when i work on my wheezy, everything is just right even when they say "its init and PID runs one by one" so what.. its a computer and should look like and act like a computer.
i dont wanna give up my reliability to some fancy mancy..

I didn't notice that. But then I'm using traditional init and
fluxbox... so I'm detached from how things are moving in general.

It's called progress. Not that I like it personally.

> we dont need gnome 3 taking too much ram, in fact we dont need any graphical runtime.

Do not install it then. GNOME3 is not the only 'graphical runtime' they
give you in Debian.

> they dont wanna support the poor wheezy for what ??? and why ??
> its the most stable OS ever.. thats why they called it old stable.

If you like it so much - you're free to support it yourself.
Besides, 'the most stable OS ever' was sarge, not wheezy, if we count
Debian releases only.

> why cant i add libpam-fprindt 1:0.5 to my wheezy so i can run my fingerprint ??

You can. Build it from the source and install it.

> why nautilus in jessie is so fancy ??

Do not use it if you don't like it.
Do not install it if you can't stand it.

Nautilus is not the only file manager in Debian.

> when i work on my wheezy, everything is just right even when they say "its init and PID runs one by one" so what..

So what indeed? Either it works and does not trouble you, or it does
not, and you file a bug report.

Elaboration needed. In what ways you give up your own reliability by
using, say jessie?

Because the upstream developers and maintainers of the software in
Debian continue to develop their software.

> debian is a linux machine, not some toy like apple.

A great many people engaged in creative endeavours would dispute your
classification of Apple's software as a toy; to them, it is a tool for
getting their job done or indulging in their hobby.

> we dont need gnome 3 taking too much ram, in fact we dont need any graphical runtime.

jessie and stretch do not force you to use GNOME 3. Debian jessie
contains an assortment of graphical environments, including traditional
X11 window managers (e.g. FVWM), non-traditional X11 window managers
(e.g. awesome), and at least four "desktop environments" (LXDE, XFCE,
KDE, GNOME).

And indeed, some users of Debian don't need any "graphical runtime"
(which is a very ambiguous phrase that will mean different things to
different people). Those users are not required to install one.

> they dont wanna support the poor wheezy for what ??? and why ??

Supporting old versions of Debian consumes scarce skilled labour.

> its the most stable OS ever.. thats why they called it old stable.

No, they *currently* call wheezy 'oldstable' because it is the version
immediately before jessie, the current 'stable'. When stretch becomes
'stable', jessie will become 'oldstable' and wheezy will cease to be
'oldstable'.

> why cant i add libpam-fprindt 1:0.5 to my wheezy so i can run my fingerprint ??

For whatever reason, the volunteer(s) responsible for maintaining
libfprint, fprintd, and libpam-fprintd did not feel that preparing
packages of version 0.5 of that software for the wheezy-backports
repository was a worthwhile use of their limited time. Maybe they just
didn't feel like it; maybe it would have involved dragging in too many
other things. I can't read minds and I haven't examined the software in
question, so I don't know.

You might, of course, be able to build a local package of version 0.5
for wheezy yourself if you care enough to learn how. It probably isn't
very difficult - but maybe it *is* very difficult for some reason, in
which case the attempt would make you understand why the Debian
maintainer didn't package it for wheezy-backports...

> why nautilus in jessie is so fancy ??

Ask the upstream maintainers. They're the people who made it "so fancy",
whatever that means.

Alternatively, consider whether a different file manager would suit your
needs better. The developers of GNOME and GTK+ have made an assortment
of design decisions over the years that I find... questionable at best,
even before GNOME 3 came out.

> when i work on my wheezy, everything is just right even when they say "its init and PID runs one by one" so what.. its a computer and should look like and act like a computer.
> i dont wanna give up my reliability to some fancy mancy..

jessie and stretch do not require you to use systemd as your init daemon
or service manager. If using a different init daemon or service manager
(or indeed *no service manager at all*) causes incorrect operation that
is not the result of user error, then that is a bug in Debian and should
be reported.

There's good news for you. You can help others help you making things
better.

You don't need to be a Debian packager. Get involved. Test things. Say
"thank you" sometimes. Field questions here.

Luckily, Debian isn't Apple or Microsoft, where shareholders and other
insiders decide what you, the product, have to consume.

I've an idea for you: pick your favorite package (tough, I know. Don't
worry to just make a "gut decision", just Do It), and send a "thank
you" to its packagers.

> :(

Cheer up, do something :-)

(Yah. Don't take me too seriously. But sometimes I'm so furious that
this *whatever* is taking over this and that and that I've to hack
my way out of it to work as I want to, that I forget that others
have no choice at all and I do have one thanks to a lot of people's
hard work -- often in their free times.

Regards

How about a more useful reply.
Is is the OP aware of the depth and breadth of resources such as:
   Debian Pure Blends [https://www.debian.org/blends/]
   Debian Derivatives [https://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives
                       https://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Census]

Has the OP been encouraged to use "Expert mode" when doing an install?
I personally see titling that option as "Expert" may be off-putting to
some. It gives insight into how the installer is organized and you are
given default options for all questions that would not be asked during a
typical install.

Another option is to install only the CLI. And then use
"apt-get install ..." to only desired packages.

Exploration of meta-packages (use metapackage as search term) will be
informative. As I consider Gnome3 to be terminally {pun intended} ugly I
base my installs on MATE.
E.G. explore https://packages.debian.org/jessie/task-mate-desktop and
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/task-desktop to get much
customization can be accomplished by appropriate choices.

The OP's observations are a natural result of the Debian Team's efforts
to provide everything that most users would expect. The problem words
there are "everything", "most" and "expect". Part of Debian's strength
is, to borrow somebody's advertising slogan, "Have it your way".

I did just that With Wheezy, 5 years ago. And I got the system I
wanted. But it's not a "forever" solution. Wheezy support will
cease when Stretch becomes Stable. And along with it support for
applications like browsers, too. Chrome development and support ended
last year. Read Firefox will do the same this year or next. Don't
remember exactly.

Nothing is forever. And I'm looking for a replacement that fits my
requirements.

I replaced Wheezy with Ubuntu 14.04, the first thing I do is $'sudo
passwd root' after that I feel right at home and can install all the
software that I use in both Wheezy and Jessie and the theme's too. I see
no difference in stability. The 14.04 mini.iso is the way to start and
get the base package and build from there. I build all my systems from
the base install including this one.

Is this all open? Is it all free? If you say yes I'll have to go and
look at what that is. If you say no, but who cares. I'll have to say
that, with the very little I know and understand, in a few years after
debian folds, there will be nothing open or free. There may be some
bootleg old and hacked copies of debian and an Ubuntu license will be
just a little cheaper than an MXS license. And development in general
will go downhill.

Question, of what I do not know. If you have Debian 6 (don't recall the
name) with all the backports enabled and up to date, if you download
Firefox51, will it run?

I recently took a look of siduction, which seems basically as sid with
some funkified packages, and some non-free stuff on top, like firmware.
It managed to identify and run some wifi gadget that I never got really
working in debian. It is beautiful, even some stuff I have hacked
myself to make it work how I want to they have done. Is it worth it?
How many people right now are looking and studying the code that makes
up the linux-patch? I have faith that hundreds are scrutinizing the
debian code beyond what debian developers do.

I wouldn't though even would want to ask here why is my damn debian
installer package not working. I have studied and installed anything
that I could possibly find out needed to make it run. It doesn't.
On a different debian based distro, I downloaded and run it and it
worked perfectly. So I am contradicting my own "political" position.
Debian is not for everyone. It is a developers' system. It is a solid
foundation to build systems for those few that know how to do it.

And then there is this other thing. It is only a few years ago that MS
sold Win7 for big money, for non-commercial home use. And they are not
even supporting their own web browser to run on that flea-dog. And I
don't think anything based on w10 will run on 7. Nobody is asking for
their money back ....... and even if they did ........

Ubuntu is just another way to say Debian, it uses the same licenses as
far as I know.

I'm not using Squeeze for a few years, don't know.

Yes, the last couple of years has produced some unhappy Debian coders
and lost a few too. Thankfully we still have good people with Debian,
but some of the newbies could drive a person to another distro.

"Damn Small Linux"(Debian) was one of those systems being used for
different applications outside of the desktop, I was repairing climate
control systems using it before I retired.

I don't use Windows for 15 years, don't know.

Never cared at all for Ubuntu from the very first time I did a test
install 10+ years ago? Never understood why it's so popular. Still
don't. Enough said.

I abandoned the desktop environment a half-dozen years ago in favor of
just a window manager and a single panel with menus, etc. KISS Right
now I'm looking at Debian-based distros -- AntiX and MX-Linux, a couple
others -- as well as a couple non-Debian ones, while avoiding rolling
releases. Unfortunately, the more I look, the more it looks like I'm
going to have to go with a Basic Install of Stretch, de-systemd it,
replace with another init, etc. A lot of work, but that's how it goes.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Your complaints are against the consequences of a market-based business
model. Fortunately with Linux, unlike Windows or OSX, you have the
option of choosing what and what not to install. So, do so. Start
with a terminal install and go from there. That's what I did with
Wheezy when I upgraded from Fedora 12 five years ago.

Or there's always the Linux From Scratch (LFS) Project. Or Arch or
Gentoo.

At least you recognize that debian is linux and it is not unix, because
Gnu is not unix either. Again, I still know very little, but looking at
the huge bug list for every system, edition, phase, etc. all I see is a
list of problems. Not a list of how to make it funkier and hipier. If
I recall X-windows predated linux by far, it is not a debian invention.
Openbox is something new. So this thing evolves as new problems are
discovered and get solved. Sometimes the only way to overcome many
problems together is to scrap the previous design and start a new one.
And that will be the next version of sid or debian 11.
And there will be a day when all the problems in stretch will no longer
be feasible patched and solved and it will become old-stable.

It is like old red biplanes with a Rolls Royce multicylinder radial.
They will not do Mach-iii

Now if you are running a server on your trusty reliable wheezy and some
fascist hacker wants to shut you up, locates a weakness in your system
and gets in and turns your machine into lasagna ... wouldn't be better
to have something funkier that the hacker can't affect?

Rχ/

PS I nearly forgot, my tired eyes can't read shell output for too long,
I like my customizable funky guis with variable colors and fonts and
graphical representation instead of hexadecimal chains.

If you are old fashioned like some of us try TDE (trinity desktop
https://trinitydesktop.org/ ) it just works as it did 10y ago with a lot of
improvment. Mem consumption is about 1G or even less.
It works great and it supports the different flavors of debian, so might be
that libpam-fprintd will work.

Since when do we reply to stupid subject lines?? It just encourages
those who use the word "wanna" to express a malformed topic. Ric

Please have a little decency, Ric. English is not everyone's mother
tongue and small Friday trolling is a venerable custom on this list.

OP is clearly upset with the direction Debian's development took,
although I agree that such form of disappointment could use some
improvement (on spelling for instance).
