That is all in line with the 'user is so dumb, so lets load it all in
case he ever needs it'

With modern RAM - heck a cheap lappie comes with 8GB these days! - as
long as the scheduler is relatively efficient* loading RAM up with code
that does nothing is not a huge issue.

:-)

*when we talked about schedulers as linked list of contexts, with
'sleep' flags in the structs, its better to have two lists - one for
active processes and on for inactive, in order not to scan the inactive
ones as often.

Makes the task of creating a thread and waking one up a bit heavier of
course.

It is if it delays me getting to do what I want to do while it
loads a whole pile of cruft that won't be used at all. I prefer the BSD
approach, load stuff into memory on demand and keep it there until memory
pressuure forces you to discard something, at least then the stuff in
memory has been used.

I don't think it is like that in Windows.
Sure there has been some era in which every application came by default
with a "quickstart tray icon" that only served to load the whole
application at boot time so it would quickly come up when it was
called by the user later.
However, at some time even the most stupid application designers got
the message that this would extend the boot time of the system and make
the client angry when he discovered that it was your fault.

But all Windows systems after XP suffer from very long boot times unless
you have a very fast machine and a solid state disk.
They apparently start a lot of stuff that is not necessary (as XP could
do without it) and severy loads the system.

Looking on the bright side the ONE (1) benefit is that you arrive at
desk, hit on switch and then wander off to get your first coffee of the
day. The long boot time is the perfect excuse for not being at said desk
if PHB should try to justify his existence by asking.

Not yet seen a PC that will boot Linux as fast as a Torch would
boot CPN (in house CP/M clone) - but then CPN was in EPROM (including all
of the core utilities which ran from RAM) so booting consisted of scatter
copying 4K into RAM and executing an IO instruction to flip the ROM out.
Even with a 4MHz Z80 that didn't take time on a human scale.

The version with two full track buffers in the 6502 memory was
blindingly fast - pity we had to sacrifice the memory to implement the
hacks WordStar and a few others used before we could release it.

Still I don't boot my workstation often so it's moot.

that is great for a work system, not so much for my personal life,
especially as I boot my personal systems a lot more.
fortunately i wont use windows at home :-)

My personal systems, like my Raspberry Pi cards, are usually left on 24

The cost of 'renewable' electricity?

my laptop sits on my coffee table & I shut it down when i am watching the
TV (my pi's & fileserver however are on 24/7 so not an issue)

And it's all still chugging away long after that desktop appears.
One of my pet peeves is software that lies about being ready.
Not that it won't actually start running something if you click on it
as soon as the desktop appears - but it takes so long to do so, due to
contention with the still-running initialization routines - that you
might as well just go for a coffee whenever you re-boot (and, being a
Windows system, you all know how often that happens).

But lying about being ready is nothing new. I first saw examples of it
on mainframes in the late '70s. And even my brand-new Blu-Ray player
does it. That's what happens when you let marketroids dictate design.

That is right. This is a major difference with Windows XP, which was
mostly ready for use when the desktop had been fully drawn.

They have added a lot of unnecessary crud in Vista and later. That
is why it needs gigabytes of memory and a lightning fast disk for
acceptable performance. The user gains abolutely nothing out of this.

That was a quarter century ago or so. And his work was on the kernel, he
needed GNU to create a whole operating system.

And the "bloat" of the Linux kernel has mostly come from working with a
whole lot of hardware. In the early days, there'd be lists of what
hardware worked, and it was pretty limited. Now what doesnt' work is the
very latest bits of hardware.

And only from some vendors.

Also, Linux has a lot better support for the real legacy hardware. Probably
supports a lot more actual hardware components than M$ Windows.

Also he did not write the entire kernel himself, he did start the
project and manage it, but by the time there was enough to run GNU userland
and a filesystem a lot of other people had contributed code to the kernel,
not least the entire TCP stack.

He didn't have to make the mistakes the previous OS developers
made and corrected. He didn't have to create new specifications but
used the specs of implementations which were 1. a good idea 2.
possible to implement and 3. had an exmple of implementation
on several hardware platforms.

he also didn't have to juggle the OS development with making
new hardware work. He was able to do great work because
of the previous work other OS developers did, especially
the tools, including the compiler work.
