And it's all still chugging away long after that desktop appears. One of my pet peeves is software that lies about being ready. Not that it won't actually start running something if you click on it as soon as the desktop appears - but it takes so long to do so, due to contention with the still-running initialization routines - that you might as well just go for a coffee whenever you re-boot (and, being a Windows system, you all know how often that happens). But lying about being ready is nothing new. I first saw examples of it on mainframes in the late '70s. And even my brand-new Blu-Ray player does it.
