#109994 — Photos 2.0 Question

FromOtto Pylot <otto@bogus.address.com>

SubjectPhotos 2.0 Question
Message-ID<121120171438357221%otto@bogus.address.com>
During the course of a given year, I will organize my photos into
albums with a description (Thanksgiving 2014 for example). All of the
albums will then reside in a folder titled with the year that they were
taken (2014 for example). Probably not the most elegant system but it
works for me. At the end of the year I will then burn the photos for
that year to a CD or DVD and archive that away.

I just copied one of my albums to the desktop so I can burn it. What
I've noticed is that all of the photos are now labeled
"Unadjustednonraw_thumb_1a9d.jpeg", etc. The info of the original photo
is gone (date and time pic was taken) and just the info on when the
photo was transferred from my camera to Photos. Clicking on the photo
in Photos has all of the info so between copying and pasting the info
was "left behind".

I do periodically backup my HD via CCC to an external drive but I would
like to delete the photos from my HD after I've burned them to a CD/DVD
to free up some space knowing that I have backup copies on a much
larger external drive as well as the optical disks.

What am I doing wrong, if anything? Is there a better way to burn the
photos to a CD/DVD and retain all of the original info?

MacBook Air running 10.12.6.

Update. I just copied another album to the desktop and noticed that
most of the pics in the folder copied over the original info, but about
a 1/4 of them didn't. Most confused.

There is nothing else to say. I have been wrestling with it and it
does inexplicable things, like rename all your Places imported from
iPhoto.

Your first export created files with "thumbs" in the file name. Hint
that it didn't actually export the full photo.

Can't speak for photos, but iPhoto, when importing a "raw" file such as
.nef from nikon will create a .JPG version so it can display it. That is
just a placeholder copy, and when you "edit in external editor", you get
the orginal .nef file in Photoshop/Camera Raw. But in a slide show or
display on your screen, it uses the generated .jpg version. (which you
can go into finder, delete, and iuse a menu to have it recreate it from
the raw image (which sometimes, but not everytime, will pluck the .xmp
side car and apply it as it creates the .jpg file.

Looks to me like you need to be more careful about the exporting
dialogues to ensure you export the right images.

(thumbnail, modified copy, original copy).

Being more careful is something that I attempted to do but obviously
failed. However, I just dragged the photos from Photos to a temporary
folder on my desktop for burning and then deletion (keeping the
original pics in Photos). It appeared that in just one album the
photos were all created as thumbs, but another album, done the exact
same way, the jpeg's copied appeared to be exact as what was in
Photos.

So, when I import pics from my Canon camera into Photos, what is the
best way to ensure that when I make copies to burn to a CD/DVD that I
can keep an exact copy of what is in Photos. I just don't remember this
when I was using iPhoto, but it's been a couple of years since I backed
up my pics to CD/DVD. Thanks.

I think this is one reason you're getting into trouble.

(Again, i don't use Photos), but I would venture to guess that selecting
the photos, and looking for an "Export" function in the menu bar (likely
File) might give you more control over exactly what is exported.

A good photo managememnt app SHOULD give you option to export the
original (raw file), the created jpeg, and modified copies (which
wouldn't be raw files)

I have no idea if Photos supports/uses .xmp side car files. If it does,
exporting only the raw will get you the original photos whithout the non
destructive adjustments you have made. (brightness, contrast, whyet
balance etc).

Taken with same camera, or one has iPhone and the other Canon photos?

I would either find the proper "export" menu item, or just get into the
photo library in Finder, find the relevant folder and copy that folder.
(depending on how Photos manages the photo files, there may be a
organsied folder hiearchy based on year, month, originals vs modified.
(again, i don't use Photos, so just transliterating what I know of iPhoto).

Futzing around in Photos I stumbled across this. If I Select All the
pics in one of the albums, and then use the Export function (Export
Unmodified Original), and then uncheck "Export IPTC as XMP" I can make
an exact copy in a folder on my desktop that retains all of the
date/time info as a jpeg. The originals appear to stay untouched on
Photos so I can burn the pics in the desktop folder and then delete
that folder after successfully burning.

If you have modified some info in the photo (added description, changed
the date etc), not checking it will result in those changes being lost.

Note: for raw images, the software won't "edit" those files and will
instead tag along a .xmp sidecar file.

For .jpeg, the software can change the exif data inside the file and
geherate an export that contains your changes.

Remember that apps like Photos store much metadata in a database,
outside the image files, but when you export, it gives you a chance to
either embed that data in the .jpeg or create a sidecar .smp for raw images.

With regards to using CDs/DVDs:

I have now scanned/ripped piles of CDs and down to only 35 to rip.

Many of them are from early/mid 1980s.

I have had 0 problems reading them 10-35 years later. However, those
were mass produced audio CDs, not CDs burned on a computer.

More importantly: Consider that Apple no longer includes optical drives
in its models. That is the more important aspect.

I had to buy an el cheapo optical drive to rip my audio CD collection
since the new Macs donLt have optical drives. And I know optical drives
are going away.

I would be moving away from optical media if I were you.

A USB key is likely going to have widespread hardware support for many
more years than optical drives and the flash chip in one will likely
last a very long time is stored properly.

Consider a DVD holds from 5 to 8GB, while you can get a 16GB USB drive
for $5 (so 2 DVDs) or store up to 16F=DVD on a 128GB USB chip.

Hard drive is likely a cheaper option. BUT, you need to consider that if
you buy a SATA drive today, will your next computer support SATA?

(The MacPro for instance doesn't have SATA interface, you need to buy
Thunderbold to SATA box). Still easy thing, but what about in 5 years?

You can continue to do CD/DVDs for now, but really bear in mind that
when you change you computer, you may lose ability to read /produce them
unless you buy extra device that is compatible with new computer.

As I learned the hard way, a computer that has all of what you need
(MacPro 2009) can die without warning, at which point you are stuck
buying a new one which doesn't have all the interfaces you need.

So it isn't just a "I cross that bridge when I get to it" in terms of
converting your CD/DVD storage archive because that bridge you happen to
you as you read this message, tomorrow or 5 years down the road.

Until such a time that audio CDs and video DVDS and BRs are completely
supplanted by digital downloads optical drives aren't going away, and I
don't see that happening anytime soon.

They're certainly on the way out for software distribution, but people
will still want them for ripping audio and video, which means people
will continue to sell them.

For most people that has already happened.

Sales have been declining on physical media for years.

optical drives already have gone away for nearly everyone. there will
always be a few people that are stuck in the past.

Maybe so, but what is taking their place?

I can see the handwriting on the wall. Years ago, souvenir recordings
of our concerts were distributed on analog cassette tape. Then Video
cassettes came along, followed by DVDs and now just digital audio CDs.
(It turns out that a good video recording location makes a lousy audio
recording.)

So what is next? Is there some media I'm not aware of, that can be read
by most people?

Fred

I don't know of any large stores left in Montréal that sells CDs. Sams ,
AA are long goe, and HVM Canada shut its doors last year.

If Apple were to sell CD quality audio on its iTunes store, I would
consider this to eliminate the need for physical CDs, but they still are
the only means to get original quality audio. (Which basically means
Amazon , but the proble is Amazon is good when you know what you're
looking for, not for browsing).

(on an iPhone or FM radio, compressed makes no difference, but on a
proper sound system with "real" music that was properly recorded it does.)

The digital music being sold is better than your ears are physically
capable of distinguishing from CD Quality.

No, it does not, and there are hundreds (at least) of studies proving
it. People who claim they can hear a difference cannot, in fact, hear a
difference.

"High bitrate audio" is a confirmation bias lie.

Very enlightening discussion. In regards to my photos, I don't modify
them or add any extra information or tags so they are what they are and
no worries as to losing any extra info. But, it sounds like copying
them to an external drive would be the way to go and just use the
CD/DVD's as a convenient redundant archive. Which brings another
question to mind. What about self-created audio CD/DVDs? I have a very
extensive Grateful Dead audio collection that I've been putting to
CD/DVD over the years. Same issues as with photo CD's?

As laptops have died over the years I've scavenged the small HD's,
reformatted them, and placed them in USB enclosures to use as external
storage devices. Sounds like I should dig them out and transfer my
photo CD's to them.

The Export feature of Photos seems to work very well when creating and
exporting exact copies of what is sitting in Photos (unmodified
originals as imported from my camera).
