A couple of my Latin teachers were pretty stubborn about even trying to
understand other languages. They were either incapable of pronouncing
foreign names properly or just plain stubborn.

Latin helped me greatly when it came to learning German and Russian. In
contrast, my sister who didn't do Latin had great difficulty with the
German dative case, as did many of the native Spanish speakers in my
German classes here in Switzerland.

And yes, I remember very little English grammar being taught after
primary school.

I've always said that the only useful things I learned in high school
were typing and the proper use of the French subjunctive. The past
anterior I learned later.

I learned calculus, physics and chemistry, with German and Russian as
minor subjects, but there was a sort of dead year when I was 16/17 which
seemed to concentrate on doing boring repetitive stuff. That year did
however teach me the patience and attention to detail to pore through
system dumps once I got into IT.

A friend reports that he was in a Boston taxi last week, and because he'd
heard about all the great seafood available in the area, he asked the
cabbie, "Say, where can I get scrod around here?"

The cabbie laughed and said, "I've been asked that question a thousand
times, but never in the pluperfect subjunctive."

I thought for a while, then said to myself, "I don't see _any_ kind of
subjunctive there." Had to see it quoted the next day before I got it.

Like the time I was driving to an autoparts store and picked up a
hitchhiker. My mind was occupied with how much trouble a friend's
Datsun was giving me, so when she said, "I need some bucks for a head
job," I responded, "Sorry, I spent it all doing the head on a Datsun."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her mouth drop open, then I realized
what she meant. I managed to keep a straight face while she processed
that. (Wonder if she thought I said dachsund?) Then, "Let me out at
this bus stop here."

Guess I don't spend enough time in the gutter.

Hitchike whores are more subtle here.

"Où allez-vous?"
"Nulle part. Je vends."
"Vous vendez quoi?"
"L'amour!"

Crossing state lines for immoral porpoises is the pluperfect

We have a law about that. It's called the White Slave Traffic Act.
Congress has modified it once or twice, but in its /original/ form it
said this, inter alia:

If a man said to a woman "Say, I hear there's an inspiring new preacher
across the state line in God City, Arkansas. Why don't we go and hear
what he has to say?" and the pair dress up in their Sunday best and
head for the church in God City, but along the way the Devil gets into
the car and makes them stop at a motel along the way and screw their
brains out, everything's cool, because the man did not transport the
woman across the state line for an immoral /purpose/ .

If, however, a man said to a woman "Say, babe, let's go check into that
motel across the line by God City, Arkansas, and screw our brains out!"
and she says "OK!" and off they go, but along the way an Angel of the
Lord gets into the car and makes them feel guilty about their plan to
commit a heinous sin, so they decide to go to the God City Baptist
Church to hear the sermon instead, everything is /not/ cool. The man
transported the woman across the state line for an immoral /purpose/
and could have been subjected to prosecution under the White Slave
Traffic Act.

The purpose of the WSTA was to punish people in general for
fornication, but especially to persecute black men. See Jack Johnson.
Now we have other ways of persecuting blacks, and today, in the absence
of a federal prohibition on polygamy, the WSTA is primarily used
against polygamist Mormon sub-cults.

And so it goes with superstition-based governing.

I was about to say that you're describing the Mann Act, but I checked, and
they're two different names for the same law.

Fortunately we've never needed such a law. But judging by the hoo-hah
surrounding this Florida business, lunatic laws are still being passed.

If you live in the U.S.A. or its territories you have such a law
whether you need it or not. The White Slave Traffic Act is federal law.

Since I don't, it's moot. But my comments re: Florida still stand.

The Mann act, while having been used for reprehensible purposes
(targeting for race or creed), was not "purposed" for such. Nor against
fornication per se, but to protect minor women from predators, however
ineffective it might be on that score. Sure, some nuts would like to
prevent thee and me from all fornication, some of whom are preachers or
lawmen.

I liked your examples of purpose, but in the latter one, like moving
picks in BB or lacrosse, there has to be contact before a foul is called!

IIRC, in that particular instance, the porpoises were immortal, not
immoral. But what's important is that people not get tensed up. q8)

Yesterday's fish.

I heard this in HS English (in a French HS) a long time ago and possibly
in a galaxy far, far away.

I never claimed that it was original or even new; seeing "subjunctive" in
the top quote reminded me of the joke, which I, too, had heard and/or read
many decades ago.

For all the Latin classes I attended, it was not till I did Latin at a
university - in the days when you had to do a foreign language for
some degrees - that I heard a really fluent Latin speaker in the form
of a Classics lecturer, (not that some of my Latin school teachers
were not mildly impressive}. The lecturer at least tried to get us to
read things out properly and to converse with us in the ancient corpse.

Hey, if you're spamming English speakers, you should have the courtesy
to speak English. You don't see me out there spamming people in
broken Gujrati, do you? (If you do, let me know, someone's stolen my
account).
