Successful at observing reality? Yes, I do want that. All evidence points to Usenet being more than just text. If you can't admit that you're wrong about that basic, obvious fact, there is no point in continuing this conversation.

You strain credulity when you have to redefine common usage of Usenet for non-ASCII purposes as hacks/text. The reality is that we no longer live in a 7-bit world, and people like you
can either admit that and push for things like Usenet to better adapt to
it, or you can hunker down in a corner with a green screen terminal and
pretend that's all you need. This being a Mac group, I'm going to side with the rational people who expect OS X to be more than something that
launches Terminal.

No, it wasn't. It was a binary encoding of a placeholder for a graphic image.
There wasn't even a way I could find to generate it on this Mac. I had to jump through hoops to get it into the clipboard on a Mavericks Mac so I could send it to this Mac over VNC. If I save it to a text file and try to open it with TextEdit on this Mac, I don't get a pile of poo, but rather some sort of "undefined" placeholder. So even Unicode support isn't going to be enough to reach everyone.

You think that because you can name it, you can understand it. But
clearly you don't. UTF-8 is merely an encoding of Unicode, which is
merely a lookup table for referencing other information. There is no
real meaning, textual or otherwise, in any of that. The "undefined"
Emoji glyphs on this Mac are just as worthless as the ? or garbled
characters that MT-NW spits out. It's not readable text, plain and
simple, and if you refuse to see that, there's nothing more to say. I'm
done with you.

It's more like "success at creating straw men. That said, e-mail and Usenet are both now used for more than text and you are basically right about that. Really, doing so undermines your argument. "The reality is that we no longer live in a 7-bit world" is correct and was pretty much all you really needed to say, without adding the ad hominem. Although straw men and ad hominem are as much a part of the legacy of Usenet as is ASCII text... For my purposes on Usenet, Terminal and slrn are indeed all I need. I don't check out the various binaries groups, having no interest in or need for any of those things. YMMV. IMHO we have some newfangled thing called the World Wide Web or some such that deals effectively with binaries. I am going to fire up my new program "lynx" to check it out. It promises to be pretty cool.

I've done no such thing. I merely pointed out that his position
regarding Usenet not only wasn't true, but *if* it *were* true, it
applies equally well to other apps. I gave him the choice of either
changing his position or doubling down on crazy. He went for Option C:
cognitive dissonance.

Where's my straw man? I'm calling Lewis out on *his*
Usenet-is-for-text-only strawman. In doing so, I refute his thinking
from two angle: 1) the common approach is to show that it is clearly
wrong, and 2) the less common but *for* more scientifically important
approach showing that *if it were true*, it would have other
implications.
I just learned the word for that not long ago: consilience. If his
logic were sound, he would *agree* that reading email from the Terminal
made the most sense, because messages (including "hacks" for encoding
binary attachments) are just as text-based as they are for Usenet. And
I couldn't really fault him if that's his crazy preference. But instead
he went truly bug-nutty and started anomaly hunting and lashing out via
projection. Your falling for it doesn't reflect well on you; pick a
better cause to champion.

Legal issues aside, the inefficiency of encoding binaries (base64 or
otherwise; raise your hand if you still remember .hqx files :-) aside,
what Usenet is remains a CDN that, sadly, failed to modernize but
*still* serves the type of audience that needs a CDN (for whatever
purpose). Regulating it to a Terminal and/or to merely text discussions
is, like I said, truly a waste of one of the greatest infrastructures we
had.

I wish that were true. If it were, I really wouldn't have need to say
anything beyond "Usenet isn't solely text". If he were rational, Lewis
would have then said "You're right. I have changed my mind. I, too,
would like a newsreader with a nice GUI. Let's discuss how we can
accomplish that." Instead he took a position that had me resorting to
colorful hyperbole to illustrate how wacky he is. Don't mistake that
for my argument, though; not all insults are ad hominem attacks. My
argument is *still* that he is factually wrong, as the evidence plainly
shows.
> Although straw men and ad hominem are as much a part of the legacy of

As is calling something a logical fallacy when it isn't one. That's the
sort of thing . . . yes, I'm saying it . . . that Hitler might do. :-)

That's sad. Like I said, it's just a CDN. If you have no interest in
Content, I'm surprised you're not a hermit living in a cave. (Hint:
this is not an ad hominem attack! ;-)
> IMHO we have some newfangled thing

No, it doesn't. Mainly, it doesn't do the Distribution part well.
Anything that gets popular explodes the bandwidth requirements of the
provider. That's why a lot of the earlier video podcasts vanished (or
fled to YouTube). Used properly, Usenet could have solved that. It
still can, but there are also a lot of P2P alternatives that might work
these days, too.

Now *there* is a real straw man. It should be clear to anyone reading
that my attack was on the *inconsistency* of the logic, not the
conclusions (which simply don't matter if the process of reaching them
is flawed). Like I said, had you chose to read it, Lewis could
*absolutely* have also rationally said instead "I do read all my email
using a Terminal command. It makes the most sense for me, because I am
still dealing with a text-based medium." But he didn't say that either.
And that you're missing the distinction means I'm clearly wasting my
time with you, too.

That's the sad part. You're like those people who *say* they're
anti-gay, yet they just can't stop thinking about all that gay sex the
gays are having. Like I said, "content" is quite neutral, bet in on
Usenet or FTP or the web or whatever. If you don't want to find dirty,
dirty things, I suggest you stop actively looking for them. I have even
suggested some excellent ways to use a CDN like Usenet (e.g., for
podcasts), but apparently you'd rather dismiss legitimate content in
favor of your feverish outlaw dreams. So sad.

No, it isn't. It's an encoding. Neither is Unicode purely text, but
rather a character set that covers *many* things that are not part of
any language (which is where I would draw the line on what should be
labeled "text"). That's why my choice of an Emoji pile of poo was so
appropriate; it makes my point on so many levels. :-)

Emacs has been my editor of choice for-just-about-ever even in OS X. When I type stuff out for snail mail or for the oul' Woman, I use Word (hey, it's fast) but for my shell/terminal config files and my html stuff, I use Emacs. In Linux I've got it permanently aliased to emacs -nw because I like the way it looks in a fullscreen Xterm better than in the X-window. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Your sweetspot is not everyone's sweetspot.

Your scope of what makes a newsreader good is pretty narrow.

Nor do I assume it is. That's why I'm pointing out that nobody should
be surprised if people jump through hoops to run some software that
cannot be easily replaced by "modern" alternatives.

But, really, what other roles does a newsreader need to fill? It's a
public system for passing around messages organized by topic groups.
That part is covered by the RFCs and was "solved" long ago. There is
really no reason to have multiple different clients *except* to cater to
the narrow gaps that aren't covered by the standards. Managing large
volumes of messages (aka, filtering) is *absolutely* something that
should be in the scope of a good newsreader. The only people who would
consider that narrow are likely people that don't read Usenet much,
because there is a lot of junk that still gets posted every day.
