You're apparently regurgitating the ramblings of George Bernard Shaw, where he attempts to make a point by using the worst possible combination of phonetic-to-letter relationships as a light-hearted illustration. How cute. All he proved though was that, like any other area of English study, there are exceptions to the rules. My teachers taught us how to spot such exceptions, the homophones, and so on, as part of our phonics curriculum, which, as I said, was only one method of a combination used to teach us the English language. Because of this, never, ever, did I or my class mates make the silly mistake of spelling "fish" as "ghoti". I certainly understand one having such an opinion if they were taught phonics in such a way that they found it lacking; but that doesn't automatically mean everyone learned that way or that all phonics curriculum is faulty. As I said, this is not a black & white world. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

Ah! and just another info, that you might not know, Tim... MT-NW does not just ignore Unicode. It tries to convert some characters into something believed to be correct, that will even display correctly at its MT-NW side. An example of this are the curly quotes. The user of MT-NW will see received UTF with them as curly quotes, but will return something unreadable for others instead. Himself will not see any problem, even in the responses from others quoting him. Only those having compliant Unicode parsers will be harmed and get rubbish. It is a bit like those driving a car with a dirty engine... They are not harmed themselves, only those behind (who drive a clean engine) will get their trouble. -- One computer and three operating systems, not the other way round. Tim already said what needed to be said as a direct response to you, so
I'll take a different angle: I'm going to attempt to use Thunderbird
like you do, and I'll either eviscerate it on the "Works well?" front,
or I'll concede it works better than my doing a VNC connection to an
older Mac just to use MT-NW. Stay tuned . . .

Only *your* message was dirty. Someone using MT-NW would not have composed such rubbish. Anyway, having given the current Thunderbird a spin for a couple hours, I can easily see it won't work for me in the long term. There are some things I like about it, but it has some killer flaws. The setup is poor, for starters. It is clearly written as an email-centric app (although not as badly as MacSOUP's POP prompting). It immediately wanted to access my contacts, which is always a concern when it comes privacy/spammers. And the way it ties server access to an identity is clunky (MT-NW gets it much better by making them two different first-class objects). In configuring the news server, there was no obvious way to enter in my authentication information. I had to click around a few different places before it finally prompted me, when fetching the full group list, to enter that info. I subscribed to all the comp.sys.mac.* groups and was off to the races. I like that it does pre-fetching of headers, but it was such slow going that it didn't seem like it was using XOVER. Worse, when it had finished the .apps group, attempts to read messages was brought to a stop because it was busy fetching the headers of other groups; dumb. It's also a bit of a pig, taking up 50x the RAM of MT-NW. But what really ruins it is the filters not being first-class objects (horrible filtering is what sinks Unison, too). The worst problem is that they are created *only* for a specific group, and I see no way to change that; people who get killfiled as idiots are idiots *everywhere*, not just the one group I'm reading. No regex support for filters. No autofill of non-From headers. Poor support of normal headers like Message-ID. Honestly, there is just no way I'm going to approach a public forum like Usenet without a robust way of taking out the trash. So it's back to MT-NW hackery for me. I do like the *idea* of a unified messaging app that Thunderbird aspires to (that's kinda the approach I would take if I ever had the time/funding to write my own newsreader-cum-CDN), but the execution is just done too poorly. So cry all you want about MT-NW not getting the "modern" features right like UTF-8 (or networking, which is ultimately what killed it on Mavericks). At least it does a better job at getting the *newsreading* features right, and that's job #1.

No, there aren't. If there were, you could name one (that I have not
already picked apart). Like I said, I've tried them all over the years
and *none* of them hit the sweet spot that Newswatcher derivatives have.
To again hammer home what makes a newsreader "good", it starts with the
ability to easily kill things I don't want to see. For your purposes,
that might mean people responding to Unicode posts using a client that
doesn't support Unicode. Can you name a newsreader that does that?

I just happen to find it hilarious that Mac users now have to resort to
using Terminal if they want a usable newsreader. I've offered to write
a nice Cocoa one (well organized with reusable components like
NNTP.framework, etc.), but nobody seems willing to pay for it or even
organize a crowdfunding campaign to make it happen. Hell, I'd even take
a shot at making MT-NW work with Mavericks if it were open sourced.
But, as it stands, Usenet is following a Monty Python theme in going
from "Spam spam spam spam" to "Bring out your dead!"

I'm finding unison usable if not great. For my specific needs, it sucks less than the alternatives. I find it hilarious that some people think there's something wrong with the terminal. (i.e., "resort to"). One uses the best tools available, and for many things there's just nothing better. But some tools have a learning curve. If you aren't willing to learn to use the best tools, you may have to settle for lesser ones which are easier to use.

Well, I never used MTNW with any regularity myself, not TB, nor any other GUI news reader. And I don't agree with your characterisation of 'resort' as if using the Terminal is some heavy burden. Please. Your argument amounts to suggesting that Apple "replace"
TextEdit with vi. Mac users expect Mac apps. And Usenet isn't solely
text. As I have suggested before, it is best seen abstractly as a
content delivery network (CDN), and it is a crying shame that its
infrastructure was gutted before it could be used to distribute podcasts
or updated to form the basis of social networks. To pretend all that is
best done for the average user via Terminal is intellectually dishonest.

The funny thing is, they shouldn't *have* to know what the underlying
mechanism is. They're just fine with using proprietary apps and sites
that implement forums, so why not Usenet? Because the front ends are
all mostly terrible.

Of the text-based readers, slrn was my favorite back in the day. But my
point is that that is a big step backwards for most people, and for the
potential of Usenet in general. I'd rather it didn't die that way.

Yes, you did; read your own quote. By your logic, editing text is (of
course!) a text based medium, and using text-based tools makes sense, so
Terminal should be used instead of TextEdit. By your logic, email is a
text based medium, and using text-based tools makes sense, so Terminal
should be used instead of Mail. And so on, for the web or RSS or any
other "text based" thing. You are selling both users and Usenet short
when you forward that argument.

And yet you created an X-Face. And yet alt.binaries.* exists. And yet
Unicode supports symbolic characters. To describe your argument, here
is the decidedly-non-text-and-mangled-by-MT-NW "pile of shit" Emoji
character:

Binary groups are neither absurd nor tangential. Web forums, including
the social networking variants/expansions, are neither absurd nor
tangential. My point is that Usenet could have, and still can, fit into
a larger puzzle. If you are unable or unwilling to see that, that's
your problem.

By your logic, I don't think you know what "logic" means. First of all, Textedit does much more than simple text files. Second of all, reading text in a text-only program is quite a bit different from editing text. And when I edit text, I use programs that are specifically designed to edit text, even if sometimes those are GUI tools. That said, I would not want to read news in BBEdit. > email is a text based medium, Some email is text, much email is not. > and using text-based tools makes sense, so Terminal should be used > instead of Mail.
