#23792 — Need Advice on AppleCare

Coming up on one year for my MBP 15" and don't want to pay full List for
AppleCare from Apple. In the past I have seen several sources for discounted
AppleCare, but nothing at present. Any suggestions appreciated!

Apple themselves usually call us just before the warranty expires, 
offering AppleCare at a discount. Beyond that, Google Shopping usually 
turns up some interesting possibilities - as long as you buy from a 
reputable dealer, you should be fine.

I bought both my MacPro and AppleCare contract from Amazon.  It cost 
less for both than just a MacPro build-to-order from Apple.  Not a lot 
less, but less.  And no sales tax.  At least until Income Tax time when 
my state asked for a Use tax for the thing.  It's almost like each state 
is going through the couch cushions looking for change to pay the pizza 
delivery guy.

I'm tired of feeling pawed through like a couch.

Some are on Ebay, but the prices are not discounted nearly as much as 
I've seen in the past.

One downside to buying from Ebay is that if you sell your Apple while 
the Applecare is still good, you can't transfer the coverage as Apple 
will require the sales receipt from an authorized Apple dealer for the 
Applecare.

Otherwise the coverage is just fine.

no they don't. applecare is tied to the machine once it's registered.
the original applecare box or receipt is not needed, ever.

the big downside to buying on ebay is it's easy to be scammed. it's
possible to get a good deal, but you must be *very* sure that the
applecare is valid and has not been used. it's safest if you get an
original unopened box, not a code emailed to you, because scammers can
create fake applecare codes which will actually register but when it
comes time to get the machine serviced, it's void.

They wanted the sales receipt for when and where I bought the Applecare 
and wouldn't complete the transfer without it.

Of course, you could just not transfer it and most times the servicer 
wouldn't know that the Applecare wasn't in the current owner's name.

that's not necessary. apple checks the serial number to see if there's
coverage, not the name. 

you can run the serial number yourself. put in the serial number in the
link below and it says if it is covered or not.

i've bought stuff on ebay with applecare and when i took it in, they
looked up the number, saw it was covered and fixed it for no charge.

true. it doesn't matter.

could be, i haven't looked in a while. 

you still have to watch out for used codes where people resell the
applecare kit after using the code. it's possible to get legitimate
applecare on ebay, you just have to be careful.

covered.  It is that you cannot transfer the coverage to a new buyer.

And you can. I sold an iPad on eBay and the AppleCare transferred with
ease. An on-line form completed by me, as I recall.

When I bought my AppleCare from Amazon, I couldn't register it without a 
sales receipt.  I sent them a copy of the Amazon confirmation email and 
that was enough to register my machine as covered.

you go to <https://selfsolve.apple.com/Agreements.do> and put in the
product serial number, applecare number and contact information and it
is registered. 

i've never been asked for a sales receipt for either the product or
applecare when registering it.

I bought my system on Amazon rather than from Apple or a dealer.  That's 
why they wanted the sales receipt.

i've bought apple hardware off ebay and not needed to show a receipt
when signing up or utilizing applecare.

That's odd.  The only time I was ever asked about a sales receipt was 
when I tried to transfer an Applecare to the new owner of my iMac.

That's because there was something fishy about your AppleCare. All
AppleCare must be registered through Apple via the serial number of the
product and the AppleCare serial number. If you buy the AppleCare and
the product from Apple at the same time this process is transparent;
the product is registered, you don't do anything, and you receive an
envelope from Apple containing information pertaining to your
AppleCare. You never need to open the envelope unless you want to
transfer the AppleCare later. if you take the item to an Apple Genius
Bar for service they scan the manufacturer's label and instantly know
that it is covered by AppleCare. You mark the envelope "AppleCare iPad
April 2012" and keep it with your April 2012 iPad's original packaging,
which you are saving in brand-new condition in order to get maximum
price for the iPad on eBay one day.

It must have been a good Applecare as the buyer of my iMac said he had 
to take it in for something before the expiration date and it was 
honored.

I didn't suggest that it was bogus, only that it may (must) not have
been properly registered when new.

The service provide will likely be Apple and the very first thing they
will do is check the AppleCare status via the product serial number.
They will know.
