#28590 — Should I go ahead and get the last Unison?

SubjectShould I go ahead and get the last Unison?
Message-ID<mft3sn$aj9$2@dont-email.me>
Just got my new(to me) iMac, and my old G4 Thoth is not capable of
running on an Intel machine(even if I could get a new version from Brian
Clark).
Have been seeing all the hoopla about Unison 2.2 and all the bitching and
moaning. Is it that bad? Is it really OK? What's the deal?
I use Pan on all my Linux machines, but wanted a graphical newsreader on
the iMac when I am using it(not slrn or tin).

It isn't going to trash your computer, and it is free, so you have
nothing to lose. Unison 2.2 is OK! but I actually prefer Unison 1.8.1.

It's broken in various ways: Crashes, locks up. Get Unison 2.1.10

Would it be free with a registration number? Panic said on their website
that 2.2 is free with no registration number required.

Panic have given up usenet readers. They've released 2.2 as a free
farewell with no commitment to maintain it (or a soft maybe).
Unfortunately they screwed it up a little.

That is what I cannot understand: why would a major OS have almost NO NNTP
clients? Hell, Linux has a ton of them, Windows still have a lot, mostly
Agent. MacOS has always seemed to be behind on that front. I guess that
MacOS users are mostly into photo apps and music/video stuff and not the
old stuff like USENET readers! My favorite NNTP app was NR/2 that came
with my OS/2 Warp Connect. White text on blue background, fast and very
readable. No binaries, but back then, binaries were only for porn
addicts!

'cause everyone wants to make money doing it. Panic apparently were not
making enough so they've dropped it. Others have bailed as well.
Recently someone suggested he would come up with a very nice up to date
usenet reader but wanted crowdsource funding up front. Not many takers.

Usenet has been in steady decline for a decade or so as fora go web based.

More correctly, they just don’t want to lose a ton of money doing it.
Development isn’t free. Support isn’t free.

> Panic apparently were not
> making enough so they've dropped it.

My read remains that Unison was a labor of love from someone inside Panic,
and they tried to make it available to other people at a great price for
all the features offered (provided the features they added were the same
ones you wanted), but the market just wasn’t big enough to cover the
increased support burden. I doubt they ever came even *close* to breaking
even, never mind “making enough”.

> Recently someone suggested he would come up with a very nice up to date

That guy was an idiot. He knew Usenet hasn’t been popular for *years* and
yet he still spent his time writing an alpha version *actually* up front.
Now he has nothing to show for his effort except getting a good chuckle
out of how many times this thread keeps popping up.

We were all served so well for so long by *NW that nothing else was
needed. Until now. And now Usenet is kinda dead, and no one cares. I
haven't seen a new Gopher client for a while either. Or Finger.

How about Archie? Would Gopher even still work? Do they still have
servers at the U. of Wisconsin?

Well, Archie was (mostly) an ftp client, and ftp is far from dead.

Gopher is still supported in some browsers including Konqueror and
Firefox (the latter with the OverbitFF add-on).

So, will ALL the releases have a free registration number? Will the one

I certainly had registration numbers for both U1 & U2, but the current
distribution of the dead Panic catalog does not require registration,
there is no support, and there will not be any updates or fixes.
Perhaps they might get the wild idea to resurrect it sometime in the
future, but I can't see that happening any time soon. So, download the
version(s) of your choice and see which works best for you. Try 1.8.1,
2.1.10, & 2.2. My preference lies with 1.8.1.

Personnally I would

Sigh... I guess I hit that send button prematurely. :-(

What I intended to say was; "Personally, I would opt for 1.8.1 before 2.2."

For me, 2.1.10 is the sweet spot.

If all you want is to read text, stick with command line tools. The
binary downloading in borked in 2.2, so I use 2.1. It's the only reason
I have Unison.

I too found the binary DL in 2.2 to be screwed up. Doesn't "multipart"
properly. I too use 2.1.1.

For text (99% of my usenet ops), Thunderbird is fine.

I was thinking about just downloading Thunderbird, it is clunky, but it
is effective.
