The Trash stays full until I'm sure I want to get rid of its contents, but
I have a "strays" folder for things I just want out of the way longer term

It has nothing at all to do with being defensive and everything to do
with someone following bad advice and turning around and blaming the
tools.

I can sympathize as well since I have lost important data in the past as
well. The difference is I cared enough to learn what went wrong and
change my behavior to ensure it didn't happen again. I could be wrong,
but that's not what seems to be happening here, since even after people
have explained what she did wrong and how to fix it, she continues to
blame the tools. This thread is the result.

I think the question was something about authenticating the new computer.

It said:

The iPhone/iPad "Whatever" is synced with another iTunes library. Do
you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?

An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing
and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of
this iTunes library."

You or your helper clicked "Erase".

Apparently I did it without realizing it. The tech who did the computer
transfer didn't have the iPad itself.

he didn't need the ipad and he failed at properly migrating your

You remind me of my sister. She'll never own up and take responsibility.
I don't know what she's afraid of; probably just being considered
incompetent. One thing I do know, though, is that when she does take the
blame on herself everything opens up between us; as opposed to when
she's beating about the bush like a silly, irresponsible little girl,
when my attitude toward her hardens because she's become untrustworthy.

obviously this person was incapable, since it did not work properly.

You should be able to restore your iOS device from the automatic
backups, using iTunes. Please note, your iPad must be physically
plugged into the computer, from which you are attempting to perform the
restore.

In iTunes on your computer, using the full size window, select you iOS
device, displayed the the top of the window. It's going to be a small
icon, just to the right of the icons for music, videos, etc. In the
Summary, there's an option to restore your iOS device, where you want
to click Restore Backup.

If your backups exist in your iCloud account, your documents, music
and photos will not be restored, as only basic things like system
files and preferences are being backed up remotely. If you've been
backing up your iOS device to your computer, everything should be
restored, including your documents, music, photos, apps and the like.

See
<https://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/12.1/index.html?localePath=en.lproj#/itns3280>

If worse comes to worse, you may be able to restore you iPad, using
iTunes on your old Mac, then performing whatever updates need to be
made so that it will cooperate with OS X 10.10.x.

If, on the other hand, you haven't backed up your device, you're going
to have to start from scratch.

While I hadn't noticed earlier, iOS 8.3 update is available. It
includes security updates. <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222>

Please note, not one of your self inflicted issues has anything to do
with running OS X 10.10.x. PEBCAK.

Backups were to computer, not iCloud. And the iPad problems occurred AFTER
spending the morning before on the phone with Apple dealing with Yosemite
problems.
The iPad WAS backed up to the old laptop running SnowLeopard.

apparently your ipad backup was not migrated to the new computer, which
is why the new computer reset it.

you can restore the ipad from the old computer and then chastise the
idiot who claimed to have done a bad job of upgrading you. if you paid
money, demand a refund.

Too late now. Driving a hundred miles would not restore the content. The
time is better spent retrieving or rebuilding content. The most important
Pages info, for instance, existed independently in a folder on my desktop.

Three/four feet from the new one, on the dining table. I'm still using it
for programs the new one doesn't have.

Apps are applications. They don't contain data, configurations or
properties. You restored the apps, but nothing else. Now you have to
go through and re-do everything from scratch. Were you expecting
different results, because everything you've described suggests that
no other result was possible from your actions?

Get over yourself. You'll survive.

Well, yeah, I guess. Are the prefs backed up? And the stuff in
Application Support?

Under normal circumstances, everything is backed up. In the case of
Erilar, who knows? AFAICT, Erilar 'lost' his backups in the aether.

Recall, PEBCAK.
