Then Copy across your iTunes library and settings again to your new computer, make sure iTunes sees the copied data, authorise your iTunes account on the new computer, and connect the iPad. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

The backup on the old laptop didn't restore app content, just restored naked apps. I don't know how to do the rest. I really would like the old iTunes back! The new one has dumped iBooks! It tries to open an empty useless one on the laptop, but that has nothing in it. -- biblioholic medievalist

You connected your iPad to the old computer you had been backing up to, in desktop iTunes you went 'Restore Backup…' in your iPad's 'Summary' tab, and you picked an appropriate backup to restore from? Are you sure you didn't backup the iPad with the old computer after your failed experience with your new computer, leaving the most recent (or more) backups without app data? I can only tell you I've restored from backup multiple times, and I always get everything back as of the time of that backup. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Not exactly. The backup specific to the device contains device settings (including a list of all the installed apps) and data from each app. If iTunes is configured to sync with the device, then iTunes keeps a copy of the apps in its library, separately from the backups (which makes a lot of sense once you think about what would happen if you had two or more iOS devices managed from the same instance of iTunes). The net result is that iTunes will typically have a backup of both the apps and their data. On the other hand, if you do a manual backup of the device to iTunes, and iTunes is NOT syncing with that device, then iTunes may end up with a backup of the data, but not the apps themselves. The usual solution in this case is to redownload the apps from App Store when the backup is restored. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Ok, yeah, but unless you've not synced to desktop iTunes in a while - and that would be a bit daft to avoid right before transitioning to a new computer, you'll typically have the apps in desktop iTunes too. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Did iTunes ever give you errors when trying to backup your iPad? Have you tried restoring from a less recent backup? Have you no backups of your iTunes dats (which will include your iPad backups) so you can test a few going back in time)? I have encountered backing up that failed, usually because some app was running on the iOS device that got in the way of backing up - usually some hefty game that took all the RAM. But never iOS to iTunes backing up that just flat out failed without error. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

You are confused. You appear to have managed to set up your iPad to
sync with your new computer -- the one running Yosemite. (Yes, it's
too bad the software written to run on PPC Macs, which haven't been
updated in more than a decade, won't run on your new Intel Mac,
running current software, but you were likely warned of this, just
like everyone else.
> In fact, they were gone!
That's highly likely. That you cannot locate your backedup data does
not mean it doesn't exist.

The other^W new computer didn't wipe out anything by itself.
Since you were incapable of following the quite simple directions I
provided, you may want to see what Apple has to say about the matter.

iTunes 12 for Mac: Back up your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad
Backing up means copying certain files and settings from your iOS
device to your computer. Backing up is one of the best ways to
make sure you don’t lose the information on your iOS device if
it’s damaged or misplaced. It’s also useful to have a backup if
you get a new device and want to transfer your previous settings
to it.
iTunes automatically backs up your device when you connect it to
your computer. But you can also back up your device manually at
any time. And if you have iOS 3.0 or later, iTunes can encrypt
your backups to secure your data.
If you ever need to restore backed-up information to your device,
you can do so.
Back up your device
1. Connect your device to the computer you normally sync with.
2. Click the device button, then click Summary.

sidebar
3. Click Back Up Now (below Backups).
To encrypt your backups, select "Encrypt [device] backup,"
type a password, and click Set Password.
To see the backups stored on your computer, choose iTunes >
Preferences and click Devices. Encrypted backups have a lock icon
in the list of backups.
Restore your device from a backup
1. Connect your device to the computer you normally sync with.
2. Click the device button, then click Summary.

sidebar
=> 3. Click Restore Backup.
If your backup is encrypted, iTunes asks you to enter the
password before restoring your files and settings.
=> Automatically backed-up information includes text messages,
=> notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget
=> settings, and more. In addition, photos in Camera Roll or Saved
=> Photos are also backed up. Other media files (such as songs,
=> videos, and some photos) aren’t backed up, but can be restored by
=> [12]syncing with iTunes.
For more information, see the User Guide for your device or the
