Python with numpy will do array work at close to the speed of Fortran -
in fact, probably faster than most people's Fortran since the folks
behind it have made use of SIMD, vector extensions, compiler extensions,
and anything else available to get the fastest code. Of course getting
top speed from any array processing takes time and effort to learn,
regardless of the language.

Any ideas how popular Prolog is today? I only tried it briefly some 30
years ago - and I found it too odd to bother learning. (I could say
much the same about APL.)
