we can't be free of the crushing heel of M$.

Government transactions which you must comply with don't follow
*nix [open standards].
You are forced to have an "up to date Microsoft compatible system".

So you just have a dual/multi-bootable system, with the first
partitions given to M$.

That worked OK, until I needed to attatch a fd0 device for some
unusual reason.
Although I normally boot into Slakware from a USBstik, with BIOS:
1stboot-device=hard-disk Debian-Wheezy's grub had made a nice
ability to also boot to M$-Win7 [fancy]. But after messing with the
fd0, grub seems to be messed too.

Some years back, it was interesting to investigate grub, but I don't
want to do that again.
Is grub too smart, and reconfigures itself as the devices change?
Eg: devices are no longer hdxN, but the <actual device ID>
and hdx has become sdy.

fdisk, cfdisk, sfdisk, *parted* ... etc. are all inconsistent,
because M$ holds the keys to the gate.
And the extra pre/dummy partition that Win* now uses ?

Perhaps a safer/more-stable method is to "come in the front door"
and use loadlin to got to the various linux?
loadlin has only got 3,4,5 simple args.

WDYS?

	Oh sure you can.
Just run an old version of XP in VB.
I see this is cross-posted so maybe the OP is a Troll
if so let me know and I will plunk him.

Well that is hard. But is it Grub or GRUB2?
>

Too bad. I never want to spend my time but I do not want
to use Windows very much. I keep it on my machine against extreme
need such as helping someone who must use it.

GRUB2 is the current choice for dealing with Windows 8
and higher systems. It is just about smart enough.

> And the extra pre/dummy partition that Win* now uses ?

No dummy partitions, each has a purpose. Windows Boot Manger in
one, efi in the other. When booting a Linux system with Secure Boot
turned off efi is mounted as /boot/efi. I took my current Windows
partion from 700 GiB to <60 GiB and made a data partition in case
I need to share or actually create something on Windows of <100 GiB.

GPartEd is the best option for setting up Linux partitions before
installation After the Windows partition is reduced by its own
tools. If you Google or whatever on "Reducing Windows Partition"
you should find a method for reduction of the page file size

On Mageia 5 RC and even on Mageia 4.1 I had no problems
and currently access Windows 8.1 by NOT hitting escape at boot up.
then waiting until the menu shows up and choosing the Mageia option
on the hard disk then picking a version of Mageia or whatever system
you are using. Not all systems are ready for UEFI but if you
scan the .iso file you should see an efi partition, Some like
Fedora have shims that let you continue to use Secure Boot.
Of course that is extra protection if whoever is there without
your permission may be un-knowledgeable and not know how to turn it
off. So put a password on your (U)EFI BIOS access whatever you
do.

Well I don't know loadlin but I used to use LiLo and I hear
there is an e-Lilo in the works but GRUB2 is the current choice.

Which Linux distribution are you using?

What sort of hardware are you using?

Good man. Plonked the troll a long time back. I only see his drivel when
someone reposts it.

Indeed I am not but I can take it as "mmOfmf" intended.

Aragorn, I am presently playing Angband on Mageia 5RC, as a dwarf
paladin wearing the Cloak of Thoringil. much dying as I find
newer deadlier than ever habitants below 1400 feet,

Damn, and I suppose that there's no way you can sneak a Klingon
disrupter into Middle-Earth. :p

Ah .. the joys of "accidentally" making a copy of the data file. :) :)

I will just say that I save often and when killed I quit and then on
restarting the game it will simply start again from the last saved file.
On the Amiga I had a machine that was slow enough I could
cheat but on the XP I did copy save files. In any case it is no great
advantage as I am rotten on everything but Klondike and KMahjongg. I
used to be a shark at Monopoly and dangerous at single deck Blackjack
but even turn by turn games throw me for a loop.

I got addicted to dungeon crawling on CPM running on my
old C=128.
Note the Subject line? I am not bluffing about my
lack of skill with games. But still I love Angband because it is like
going shopping at bargain basement. Sharpest elbows(?) get the best
clothes.
This is Angband 3.5.1 and it is different in that the stores
in town no longer buy your excess equipment. Maybe staves or wands
in the Magic Shop, Other shops will accept equipment for id but
not oat for it. The Dwarven race can spot lodes of metal or jewels
a few tiles into the wall so it does not take long until you are
rolling in cash.

Note that Mageia has decided not to support restricted boot (aka secure
boot). It must be disabled to boot Mageia.

Oh yeah, known troll for many years. I have at least 10 different

Do you dispute that mt topic is applicable to all forks of linux?!

The easy way was to allow M$ have the first partition/s of the new HDD,
and let other OSs come in the back-door; originally via a fd0, and what
I really like in Slakware now, via a USBstik.

I'm not commited to A distribution or hardware.
That's why I strive to avoid M$ locking-me-in.

You can have Windows on a different than the first partition.

Oh fd0? We're talking about the late 1980s/early 1990s and you run
Windows 3. Finally all you say makes sense.

I guess you have messed up the partition table. (Probably) not even
Microsoft's fault.

Real-time PAYE reporting to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs in the
UK. There is a 32-bit Linux version, which I have failed to get working
on either a real 32-bit machine or a VM in 64-bit. And I've run Sid for
a decade. It's certified for a particular Red Hat, and possibly a Suse.

There's other stuff for professional use, such as Microchip's MPLAB
IDE. The most recent versions are Java, which do run on Linux, but
which fail (so far) to compile my most important project, while the old
Windows one works. The OS driver for the PicKit programmers is no longer
supported and was dropped from Debian long ago. I would assume the
Microchip Linux driver works, but I didn't get far enough to find out.

And no, this kind of stuff never runs on Wine/Crossover, or at least
not without a large amount of work which I don't have the time to do.
Last year, when XP was officially buried, I went out and bought a new
laptop specifically to run Windows. Not something I would do lightly.
It was not much more expensive than a version of Windows which is
licensed to run in a VM would be, and again, it invariably turns out
that the specific program I want to use doesn't play nicely with VMs.
People who write hardware drivers put in the absolute minimum amount of
work to make their stuff run on real bare-metal Windows, and it often
doesn't work through Wine or even a VM.

If the govt insists you use their system, seems to me it's their duty to
provide one that works. :)
Report it as broken ?

Apparently not.
Is it difficult to understand that on a PC with the LATEST M$ [for
the FB/twitter mentality kiddies] one may need to investigate some
*UNRELATED* task which needs to connect a fd0, instead of getting
a separate PC?

M$ *WANTS* non-M$ users to screw up, hence the concept "fault" can
no be applicable. Can you understand anything?

Turn off secure boot, and don't buy a system where that cannot be done.
