The US had plenty of helium.

Howard Hughes' movie 'Hell's Angels' has a scene where the Zepplin is 
struggling to gain altitude and needs to lighten the load. The crew 
dutifully lines up and jumps for Kaiser and country.

at work. The infighting of the Weldon Institute over heavier versus 
lighter than air craft may reflect actual debates in 1886.
